Called Forth to New Life: The Third Scrutiny at Saint Mary, Mother of God

On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, our parish family at Saint Mary, Mother of God gathered to celebrate the Third Scrutiny for our OCIA Elect. Accompanied by their sponsors, they continue their final steps toward receiving the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil, drawing ever closer to full communion with the Church.

The Gospel proclaimed the powerful story of the Raising of Lazarus, where Jesus reveals Himself as “the Resurrection and the Life.” At His word, Lazarus is called forth from the tomb—showing that Christ has power even over death and desires to lead each of us into new life.

The Scrutinies are sacred moments of prayer, inviting the Church to intercede for the Elect, that all that is weak may be healed and all that is good strengthened within them. As they prepare for Baptism, this final scrutiny points toward the promise of resurrection and the new life that awaits them at Easter.

As we continue this Lenten journey, let us keep our Elect in prayer. May they hear the voice of Christ calling them by name, and with faith, step into the life He offers—alive, restored, and made new.
